SamStrong: Search for the Cure was born when Sam learned in October 2012 that his cancer had returned. Sam had battled medulloblastoma for over three years, during which he underwent three surgeries, two rounds of craniospinal irradiation, and multiple chemotherapy regimens. A follow-up MRI at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital on October 15, 2012 showed that the cancer had spread in his brain and spine, and there were no more curative options. He decided that if he was not going to be cured and he was not going to find a cure for others as a pediatric oncologist, he would spend his remaining time and energy raising awareness of and funds for pediatric brain cancer research at St. Jude. From this decision came SamStrong: Search for the Cure.
